Factory Stories

Starting from a warehouse/residence for 30,000 yen per month

February 1970. When Akihiro Ito left the steel company he worked for and founded his own business, his daughter Mizue Okuda was reportedly only 10 months old.
Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd. began in a rented property that served as a warehouse, office, and residence for 30,000 yen per month.

My mother worked while carrying me and my sister on her back. I sometimes accompanied my father on deliveries. Our playground when my parents were working was inside the room's closet.

To support his family, he reportedly worked desperately until late every night.

As a new steel material supplier, Akihiro decided to thoroughly do what other companies disliked or avoided. If there was a request, he would accept orders for steel materials from a single piece, maintain inventory to achieve short lead times, and handle steel materials of any type requested by customers.

Furthermore, he created and distributed size charts to customers, making it easier for them to place orders.

This stance was well-received, and as the range of steel materials handled expanded, so did the number of business partners. By the time the company was incorporated in 1988, it had grown to a scale operating 10 factories with approximately 70 employees.

Rebuilding the Business through Selection and Concentration

Mizue Okuda joined the company in 1991.
It was after the collapse of the bubble economy, a period when various companies were successively going bankrupt.
Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd.'s management was also becoming severe.

We thoroughly reviewed the business operations, eliminated waste, and restructured by downsizing factories through selection and concentration, enabling operations with a small number of staff.

As a result, the number of employees became 9, and the business scale became compact.
Amidst this, three young employees whom Akihiro had been nurturing reportedly resigned.

I felt that my father, who had overcome both the bubble collapse and the Lehman Shock, was very disheartened at that time. That's when I told him I wanted to succeed him as president.

The organizational reform was what Mizue, as the new president, undertook.

After the bubble economy collapse, a system was established to review operations and enable management with a small number of people.
Although sales had decreased, the company was in a state where it could generate proper profits.
To continue this and reverse it into growth, organizational development was necessary.

From a Culture of Following the President to a Culture Where Employees Think and Act Independently

During the period of business expansion from the founding, the company was led by Akihiro's powerful leadership.

Because of that, employees found themselves in an atmosphere where they couldn't speak up about good or bad things, and they became unable to think and act on their own.

Communication among employees was also reportedly almost non-existent.
Mizue felt a sense of crisis that the company would become unable to do anything without Akihiro.
Thus, Mizue went around the factories, spoke to employees, and created opportunities for them to actively express themselves, thereby promoting cultural reform.

Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd.'s Style of Organizational Development

There is one more thing we are conscious of in organizational development.
That is not to give instructions to employees.

When I first joined the company, my father would give instructions on how to do things to other employees, but for some reason, he never gave me any instructions.

Akihiro's style was to show the goal but never teach the path to get there. At times, he would even tell Mizue, who had no sales experience, to go out and do sales. Mizue didn't know what to do, but she would visit companies three times more than others, just trying to move more than anyone else, and conduct sales.

I never asked my father for instructions on how to do things. But thanks to that, it's certain that I developed the ability to think about what to do to achieve the desired results.

This way of thinking is also applied in the current management of Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd. A culture where employees think and act independently fosters their growth, which is necessary for the company to grow further.

Expanding Business Partners and Partner Companies Nationwide

Mizue also carried out reforms in sales.

Around 2000, we created a website. With fewer people and not enough hands for sales, we decided to utilize a website.

At that time, few companies had their own websites.
Since it would cost 1 million yen to create three pages, Mizue, whose proposal was rejected by Akihiro, reportedly created the website herself with a book on website creation in hand.

I thought people probably wouldn't particularly want to see photos of our company, so I only included a size chart. I made it a size that could be printed on A4 paper.

For customers looking for steel materials, that was exactly the information they wanted.
Thus, through the website, the company began to expand its customer base and partner companies nationwide.

After that, she also started working with SNS and YouTube videos, and even now, Mizue herself updates YouTube.

If You Ask Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd., You Can Get Anything

Currently, Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd. reportedly has about 1,000 business partners annually.

In addition to B2B transactions, there are also individual customers who want steel materials for DIY and other purposes.

This is because the company has inherited Akihiro's consistent stance of 'never refusing a customer's request' and 'thinking how to make it possible.'

Maintaining inventory of various types of steel materials is also a risk.
However, it is precisely because of this that it has led to the image that 'if you ask Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd., you might find the steel materials you need.'

In fact, some customers have told us they were turned down by nearly 10 companies before finally reaching us.

Actually, this customer was not troubled by material procurement, but by the inability to perform subsequent processing.
It is precisely because Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd. has a wide range of business partners that it can achieve difficult processing and deliver parts in the shapes customers require.

The Spirit of Not Refusing Fosters Trust with Customers

Generally, steel material suppliers tend to avoid small orders or rarely handled steel materials.
Because of this, some customers reportedly complain that they were sarcastically asked 'Is that all?' over the phone and never want to call again.

At Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd., the spirit of 'not refusing' is deeply rooted, so all employees readily respond with 'Yes, we can' to any customer order.

There are also stories that individual customers who ordered steel materials for their hobbies liked Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd.'s service so much that they switched their company's orders to Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd.

Furthermore, many customers introduce Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd. to acquaintances who are struggling to find steel materials, suggesting, 'Why don't you ask Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd.?'

If judged solely on cost, we cannot compete with major companies. I believe we earn customer trust through the ability of our people to respond quickly and accurately to customer requests and by adding value to steel materials.

From a Company Where You Can Get Anything to a Company That Can Do Anything

Processing is also a value-added service for the steel materials sold by Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd.
By introducing large processing machines, it became possible to apply various types of processing to steel materials.

And by creating videos of processing samples and publishing them on YouTube, they are promoting what kind of processing they can do.

Since customers have different preferences, such as wanting delivery in a nearly finished state or having processing done halfway and completing the finishing themselves, we add value to steel materials by processing them according to customer requests.

Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd. is transforming from a 'company where you can get anything' that handles any type of steel material, to a 'company that can do anything' by also performing processing according to customer needs.

A Company Employees Can Recommend to Their Own Children

When asked about the future of Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd., Mizue said, 'I want to make it a company where employees would want their own children to join.'

She believes that the company should not just be a place to get work done, but a place where employees can enjoy growing.

I want employees to be able to value their hobbies, leisure, and time with family. And I hope the company can become a tool for realizing dreams.

When deciding the company name at its founding, it was named 'Ito Akira Sangyo' instead of 'Ito Akira Kozai' (steel materials) so that it could expand into various businesses beyond steel materials.
By fostering an environment where employees can think freely and take on challenges, the company is reportedly considering diversifying its business beyond steel materials, just as its name suggests.

We look forward to seeing what kind of evolution Ito Akira Sangyo Co., Ltd., which can do anything, will show us in the future.
