Factory Stories
Acquiring Technology in Anticipation of Aluminum Demand
Fukui Aluminum Kogyo Co., Ltd. manufactures aluminum-centric building material components and performs steel fabrication, focusing not on 'can' or 'cannot,' but on 'how can we make it happen.'
The company was founded by Yasuo Yasuda, grandfather of the current president, Akihiro Yasuda.
His grandfather, who was a vice president at a company in Fukui Prefecture, decided to become independent after a disagreement with the president regarding management.
Then, he decided to have his employees train for about one year at a company in Chiba Prefecture, which was run by a friend from his student days.
"The person who later became managing director and the current factory manager, who had just graduated from high school, were dispatched to Ninomiya Sangyo."
Fukui Aluminum Kogyo Co., Ltd. was established in 1973, after completing training in aluminum welding technology at the company in Chiba Prefecture.
At that time, aluminum was rarely used in building materials, and there were few companies capable of aluminum welding.
"We embarked on a business using state-of-the-art technology for that time, anticipating that the demand for aluminum would increase in the future."
Entering the Aluminum Building Materials Field with a 'Just Try It' Attitude
"When we first started, steel fabrication was our main business. We handled large, one-off items like control panels or turbines used in power plants. We took on orders that would take several months to produce once received."
Subsequently, the surge in crude oil prices due to the oil crisis significantly impacted the aluminum smelting industry, and this effect spread to the aluminum processing industry.
Consequently, Fukui Aluminum Kogyo Co., Ltd. began undertaking steel frame construction work as well.
"Handling steel frames led to an increase in construction-related work. This was the catalyst for our shift from steel fabrication to aluminum building materials."
From there, we further developed our technology and system, enabling us to provide integrated services from design, manufacturing, and construction to after-sales care.
Furthermore, we undertake highly challenging manufacturing projects that other companies have deemed too difficult and refused.
"We can't compete with major companies in mass production. The attitude of 'just trying it,' even with difficult projects, has been inherited since our founding."

Aluminum Processing Technical Capabilities
Aluminum and steel have different characteristics in welding and bending.
"Even those experienced in steel welding might find that aluminum doesn't adhere cleanly or that welding speed isn't uniform."
In bending, the feel of the bend changes depending on the plate thickness and material type.
Furthermore, it is said that differences also arise depending on the season and temperature.
The ability to accurately finish even difficult processing according to drawings comes from years of experience.
In fact, we have successfully manufactured exterior panels with complex curved shapes.
It was a shape with curves and required multiple bending processes in stages.
Although it was a complex curved processing that other companies deemed difficult and refused, Fukui Aluminum Kogyo Co., Ltd. utilized its bending and welding technologies to complete that exterior panel.
"We don't have any special machinery or patented technology. Probably, if you look at each individual technique, it's something anyone can do. However, we refine our core bending and welding technologies and adapt to new demands with ingenuity, without being fixated on what we are currently producing."
Sales Staff Capable of Design
Fukui Aluminum Kogyo Co., Ltd. has established an operational system that allows for integrated services from design to after-sales support.
It is likely that few companies of Fukui Aluminum Kogyo Co., Ltd.'s business scale employ dedicated designers.
"Our company doesn't have employees specialized in design; they are sales staff who also handle design. This helps us keep personnel costs down. And because they handle both sales and design, customer requests can be directly reflected in the drawings."
Since customer requests are drawn up in-house, we can clearly determine which parts of the components to be manufactured are critical, where precision is required, or conversely, where high precision is not as necessary.
By sharing this information with the manufacturing floor, we can respond to even difficult requests.
It is said that we started employing these sales-cum-design staff about 30 years ago.
Because we were able to quickly establish this system, we became able to smoothly accept orders from outside the prefecture.
Since the sales staff, who serve as the customer contact, can also design, we can eliminate communication time loss and create highly accurate drawings, even for remote transactions.
"To keep costs down and make a product viable, planning accounts for 80%. Even with difficult orders, we can succeed by thoroughly planning bending and welding from the initial stages."
It is the employees on the manufacturing floor who give shape to the drawings that reflect customer requests, created in this manner.
On the floor, consistent quality is maintained by assigning tasks according to each employee's skills.
"This division of labor is also a double-edged sword. Assigning preferred processes leads to good processing, but it also leads to over-reliance on individuals. However, it takes over 10 years to master all processing techniques. Developing engineers to reduce this over-reliance on individuals is a future challenge."
Manufacturing Management Utilizing IT
Another reason Fukui Aluminum Kogyo Co., Ltd. is supported by customers is its commitment to strict adherence to delivery times.
In this industry, even when delivery times are communicated, they are often not met due to operational circumstances.
Amidst this, Fukui Aluminum Kogyo Co., Ltd. introduced an IT system to manage manufacturing progress and established a system to ensure on-time delivery.
"Previously, we had our on-site staff write daily reports by hand. This was cumbersome for them, and the accuracy of management was low."
By introducing the system, progress information can now be easily collected using barcodes.
Process management for operations has become accurate, and visualization has been achieved, thus establishing a system for strict adherence to delivery times.
Service Exceeding Expectations Through Small Considerations
Akihiro Yasuda states that he wants to create a company where employees do good work that benefits others, making everyone involved—customers, suppliers, and the employees themselves—happy.
"If we're going to do it anyway, I think it's better to do things that make people happy, get paid for it, and become happy ourselves."
Yasuda feels that the current achievement rate of his ideal is about 40%.
"I'm not asking for anything extraordinary. For example, I hope that small details like attire, tidiness, cleaning, and handling visitors can gradually improve."
The same applies to work.
He hopes that employees will be able to apply just a little bit of awareness and a little bit of effort, for example, thinking 'the customer would be pleased if I just rounded this corner a bit more.'
Small considerations evolve into services that exceed customer expectations.
"Even if the products manufactured are almost identical, I believe that such subtle awareness, thoughtfulness, and responsiveness make a difference."
By establishing a system for strict adherence to delivery times through the introduction of an IT system, Fukui Aluminum Kogyo Co., Ltd. has taken a step forward.
Moving forward, it will continue to evolve step by step to turn its ideals into reality.
