Factory Stories
Roots of Kawaguchi Kaseihin
Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd. was founded in 1901 (Meiji 34). It is a long-established company with over 120 years of history.
Yohei Kawaguchi, the 4th generation president, founded the company under the name Kawaguchi Shoten, which was started by his great-grandfather, Asajiro. At that time, it mainly sold paints, pigments, and industrial chemicals.
As times changed, the products handled also changed, and after the war, the company primarily dealt with industrial paints, which continues to this day.
Yohei took over Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd. in 2008, when he was 39 years old. Coincidentally, it was the same age his father took over the company.
"In 2008, when I took over the company, we recorded our highest sales ever. However, the following year, sales dropped by about half due to the impact of the Lehman Shock. We had continuous deficits, and I felt like I wasn't truly living."
Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd., with its long history, must have faced difficult situations many times. Yohei faced adversity immediately after becoming president and successfully overcame it.
Features of Kawaguchi Kaseihin
While many companies handle coating materials, most primarily deal with architectural paints, or both architectural and industrial paints.
In contrast, Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd. specializes in industrial paints. This allows us to offer a wide range of industrial paints from domestic and international manufacturers and respond quickly to customer needs.
Furthermore, we handle both solvent-based paints and powder coatings, and we have a hazardous materials warehouse for storing solvent-based paints and a powder coating warehouse for storing powder coatings.
Powder coatings are sensitive to heat and can clump together at high temperatures. That's why we built a dedicated powder coating warehouse equipped with air conditioning.
In addition, we sell coating equipment such as powder coating machines and spray guns. Not only that, but we have also obtained licenses for machinery and equipment installation and painting work, and we undertake the installation of coating facilities.
Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd. is not merely a distributor selling paints; it is a comprehensive service provider that handles all aspects of industrial coating.
Potential of Powder Coatings
Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd. is so committed to powder coatings that it built a dedicated warehouse for them.
Japan's annual paint production is approximately 1.6 million tons, of which powder coatings account for about 30,000 tons. Among the approximately 300 paint manufacturers, only about 10 produce powder coatings.
While the adoption of powder coatings has not progressed significantly in Japan, Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd.'s sales ratio is said to be about 70% solvent-based paints and 30% powder coatings.
This indicates that Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd. has a significant presence in the Japanese powder coating market.
"While Japan's powder coating production is 30,000 tons, Italy reportedly produces 100,000 tons. Although a simple comparison cannot be made, we believe there is significant room for growth in Japan as the use of powder coatings is increasing overseas."
Overseas, due to higher environmental awareness, the adoption of solvent-free powder coatings is progressing. In Japan, VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) reduction targets have also been set, so attention to powder coatings is expected to increase in the future.
The main reason powder coatings have not been widely adopted in Japan until now is that their advantages did not outweigh their disadvantages.
Powder coating cannot be applied thinly, which limited the products it could be used on. Also, the unique texture of powder coating was not favored in Japan, where a smooth finish is preferred, making it difficult to adopt.
However, these disadvantages have been overcome by the "IPD Atomized Powder Coating Control System."
IPD Atomized Powder Coating Control System
To solve the disadvantages that occur during powder coating, Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd. developed its original product, the "IPD Atomized Powder Coating Control System."
The IPD Atomized Powder Coating Control System can resolve issues such as orange peel texture, spitting, and uneven patterns in patterned powder coatings.
"The mechanism has been published in a paper. However, it's meaningless without verification, so we built a prototype, tested it, and put it into practical use."
By atomizing powder coatings and supplying them in a controlled amount, uniform and even powder coating can be achieved.
This not only reduces coating defects but also saves on paint consumption.
Significant Advantages of Powder Coating
Powder coating is a solvent-free coating, so excess paint can be collected and reused. This is not only environmentally friendly but also reduces costs.
One company was using powder coatings but was troubled by a coating defect commonly known as the "picture frame effect." They had made requests to the paint manufacturer, but it was difficult to reduce defects solely by improving the paint. So, they introduced Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd.'s IPD Atomized Powder Coating Control System. As a result, the picture frame effect became less likely to occur, and the defect rate significantly decreased.
The results of the IPD Atomized Powder Coating Control System have pleased not only the companies that were able to reduce defective products but also powder coating manufacturers.
Furthermore, at another company, by using powder coating with the IPD Atomized Powder Coating Control System, coating variations improved, and paint defects decreased, leading to an improvement in coating quality. In addition, the amount of powder coating used decreased by approximately 23%, resulting in cost reduction.
The manufacturing industry is facing a difficult phase due to rising material prices and the depreciation of the yen.
"Precisely because of these times, I believe companies will consider switching to powder coatings, which can provide continuous cost reductions."
Yohei stated that he sees the challenging global situation as an opportunity and wants to convey the advantages of powder coating.
Doing the Obvious, Obviously
Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd. has overcome various adversities and has been supported by its customers for over 120 years. When asked about the reasons customers choose them and Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd.'s strengths, Yohei replied, "We are just doing the obvious, obviously."
Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd. owns 5 trucks and handles its own deliveries within a 50 km radius from Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd. in Aichi, Gifu, and Mie prefectures.
With common carrier delivery, paints are often handed over at the store. Because we handle our own deliveries, we can deliver paints directly to the customer's paint warehouse.
This is especially helpful for powder coatings, which are sensitive to high temperatures, as delivery to the warehouse is a great advantage.
By possessing multiple hazardous materials warehouses and powder coating warehouses, stocking a wide variety of paints sufficiently, and utilizing our own delivery service, we can flexibly respond to sudden requests such as changes in customer production volumes.
Furthermore, we value our connections with customers and actively provide information related to industrial coating.
"We aim to be a service provider for industrial coating, not just a business that moves goods from right to left."
Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd.'s "obvious" is providing a level of service that is difficult to do "obviously."
Aiming for the Spread of Powder Coating
As one of the international goals of the SDGs by 2030, VOC reduction has been proposed.
While water-based coatings are progressing in architectural painting, it is said that progress is still limited in industrial coating.
"We want to help with whatever we can for the sake of the global environment."
With this in mind, Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd. is engaged in activities to mitigate the disadvantages of powder coating and convey its advantages.
Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd.'s challenges also extend to paint baking ovens.
Powder coatings require higher temperatures for baking than solvent-based paints, which can lead to higher CO2 emissions. To mitigate this disadvantage, Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd. proposes ovens that can bake at high temperatures in a shorter time.
Kawaguchi Kaseihin Co., Ltd.'s stance is to not only sell paints but also to make better proposals from every angle.
